| This short tutorial will explain a few of the basics
of Painter Color Sets, their information
text files, and how to load them into Painter
6. (Painter
5 translations are shown in parentheses).
If you open, for instance, the Painter
6 PainterColors-WEB.txt
file (or another Painter
Color Set text file), as you would any text file in a text reader,
you'll see the information
Painter uses
to display the correct colors for the chosen Color
Set, the number of rows and columns, each color swatch's width
and height, the text height (the Painter 6 "Pantone.txt"
Color
Set, for instance, can display the color numbers in Painter),
and the grid spacing between each color swatch. Then, it lists each color's
RGB
and HSV numbers. Notice that in the
Color
Set text sample shown here, the
HSV
numbers are all 0.00. The default is
RGB for Painter,
though the HSV values can also be seen
in the Art Materials palette, Colors
section, in the lower right corner where you see the RGB
numbers. Clicking that box, toggles the RGB
and HSV color numbers off and on.

Below are the first few lines of two sample text files
for the Color Sets named "72pencil.txt"
and "Pantone.txt" (Painter
5 "Pantone Colors.txt"). It's the first one in the folder of
Painter
6 Color Set text files located in the folder: Painter/Content
Sampler/Color Sets/
(Painter 5/Extra
Art Materials and, in Windows, type *.* to display
.TXT
files as Painter may be looking for .PCS
files, then highlight the appropriate .TXT
file and click the Open buton). When
I opened these files in Windows Notepad,
the text displayed in continuous lines and didn't make much sense. Then,
I opened them in Windows Wordpad, which
displays some formatting, and here's what I saw (Mac
users will have to use equivalent text readers to see similar results):
