My system specs:

Win98 SE
Pentium III
500 mHz
20 GB hard drive with about 11 GB free, non-partitioned
128 MB RAM
NVIDIA RIVA TNT with 8 MB Video RAM
17" Monitor set to 1024 x 768, 32 bit color

Miscellaneous Zoom Tests:

1. Opened 2000 x 2000 Canvas, 300 ppi.
2. Double-clicked the Grabber tool.
3. Image window jumped to about 1.25" x 1/2". Top of image window information not visible. Scale slider and number not visible. At top of Painter screen, only "Painter 7" displayed.

4. Stretched the image window. Canvas was about 1/16" x 1/16". Top of image window read "0%". Scale slider number was 100%.

5. Used Ctrl+M to Maximize the image window. Scale slider not visible. 
6. Clicked "double-window Maximize" button to bring the image window down to its previous size, then typed 25% into Scale slider number box and hit the Enter key. 
7. Clicked the Maximize button. Now the Scale slider and scroll bars and Tracing Paper, Grid, etc. icons were visible.
8. Image now displayed entirely within open area of screen with room to spare.
8. Used Window > Zoom to Fit.
9. Image Window remained Maximized but Canvas again displayed at 1/16" x 1/16". Top of image window again displayed "0%". Zoom slider number was again 100%.

10. Double-clicked the Magnifier tool. Canvas was now too large for my screen but Scale slider, scroll bars, and icons remained visible. 
11. In Preferences > General, set Magnifier increments to 10%.
12. Held down the Alt key and clicked once with the Magnifier tool. Top of image window said 91% (this is 9%, not the set increment of 10%... it should have been scaled to 90%). Scale slider also said 91%.
13. Held down the Alt key and clicked again with the Magnifier tool. Top of image window said 83% (this is, again, not 10%, nor is it 9% of 91%... it should have been scaled to 80%). I think the Scale slider says 83% though it is hard to read and could be 82%.
14. Held down the Alt key and clicked again with the Magnifier tool. Top of image window said 75% (again, not 10%, nor is it 9% of 83% .. it should have been 70%). Scale slider said 75%.

NOTES:

By now, along with others demonstrated above, the problem of scaling in increments of 10% has been clearly shown to be not working in even a remotely sensible manner.

Another very experienced Painter 7 user tells me that when an image that is 600 x 800 is opened and either double-click on the Grabber tool or Window > Zoom to Fit is used (this works on his Win2000 system), the Canvas is too tall to fit within his Painter screen while an image that is 800 x 600, when either double-click on the Grabber tool or Window > Zoom to Fit is used, fits the Canvas within his Painter 7 screen. He comments that both double-click on the Grabber tool or Window > Zoom to Fit only take into account the Width of the Canvas, not its Height. Since neither double-clicking the Grabber tool nor using Window > Zoom to Fit works for me, I can't test this. I will request that he submit his system specs and all other details to Tanya Staples in order that her QA people can work on these problems and include appropriate fixes in the next patch.
